[As I stood outside on the steps of Constitution Hall, on a Friday night, in Washington, DC, I observed all the people arriving in style to experience Kem Live at his “Promise To Love Tour”. Are you a diehard Kem fan? I asked as some walked by me. Yaaassss, was the immediate response that was certainly attached to the enthusiasm of anticipated enjoyment, everyone seemed to share. If I still wasn’t sure about diehard fans being in the building, once Kem walked on stage and the lights came up, followed by the sound of his voice piercing hearts from the front row all the way back to the last balcony seat in the back, it was very clear! I believe Constitution Hall may have just housed all of his biggest fans. You know you are a diehard fan when you’re dressed for the Gods, walk all the way down the center aisle to get as close to the stage as possible, bend down to get on your knees, in white, just to take a pic or capture a video clip. That is a diehard fan. When you get out of your seat on the front row, walk over to Kem and make yourself apart of the show because you have to get that video footage of you, with Kem behind you singing to you. You are a diehard fan! These examples only address pieces of the overall atmosphere.]
The love was very real for Singer, Songwriter, Instrumentalist, Record Producing, Motown Recording Artist Kem. There was a special light in everyone’s eyes. People seemed to be grateful to be caught up in his rapture. In many ways, Kem was bringing comfort to hearts. Lyrically mending relationships that were on their last leg of hope, while serenading those in love but couldn’t find the words to express it. Many couples were gazing into each other’s eyes as they swayed back and forth to the many hits Kem was vocally slaying. Classic, is only the tip of the iceberg, that describes such a stellar performer such as Kem. It makes perfect sense that he is signed to Motown Records. He embodies that feeling that stirs the soul and relaxes your mind while you let go and get lost in the music.
To know his humble beginnings really rounds the caliber of his artistry. Refusing to conform to industry popularity procedures of genre, style or tempo of music, he continued to write from the heart and musically engaged the tempo the lyric created. That method would eventually turn into his introductory album to the masses, we now know as “Kemistry”. This self made business savvy man, sold 17,000 CD’s out of the trunk of his car before he was signed to a record label. He was doing shows and people would start singing his songs to him before he could get them out. That’s when he said he knew this was destined. He had the follow through and belief in himself and evolved it. So, when he stood on Constitution Hall’s stage possessing confidence, it was deeply rooted in the hard efforts put into getting himself to these kinds of platforms.
Backed by an incredible band and three backing vocalist, along with two very talented dancers, Kem made sure to entertain. There were moments in the show where the audience saw exclusive video footage of him speaking to us, an Earth, Wind, and Fire medley by his backing vocalists, a rapper joining him and of course, the delight of his wonderful music repertoire. Songs such as: “Share My Life”, “Why Would You Stay”, “Your On My Mind”, “It’s You”, “Nobody”, “Downtown”, and “Promise To Love”, to name some. Overall, his Promise To Love Tour was a full show that kept everyone’s attention. It stands out as a stellar concert that left audience members raving about how awesome it was. Congratulations to Kem and all of his deserved success. We here at Concert Daily wish him an abundance of love and continuous support and success within all of his endeavors.
