Diana Ross, Solange, Mary J. Blige And More Lead The Charge Of The 2017 Essence Festival Headliners

emf2017

Well Merry Christmas INDEED to us! The folks over at ESSENCE just blessed us with an early gift, which came in the form of the 2017 Essence Festival talent lineup.

They really seem to be on the ball this year with announcements regarding the annual festival, because last year no one heard anything about ANY acts until the end of February 2016. As of right now, we haven’t even entered into the new year yet, and have a full deck of playing cards, NICE!

Now we know who will be taking over NOLA this 4th of July weekend. That’s right, one of the biggest national musical events, the annual Essence Music Festival, slated for June 30- July 2, 2017 pulled a sneak attack and threw out a list of some of it’s headliners.

Last year’s festival brought some huge names in music, with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Puff Daddy & The Family, Mariah Carey, Ciara, Charlie Wilson, Babyface and many more taking the stages, so get into who will be rocking the Mercedes-Benz Superdome this year…is it anybody that you want to see?

Headliners include a few Festival first-timers, The Boss, Ms. Diana Ross and Teyana Taylor making an appearance and Festival favorites, Mary J. Blige and Erykah Badu coming back to rock the stage. We also see some people on this list who haven’t performed at the festival in a while, most notably Solange, who has had an amazing year this year, but hasn’t stepped foot on the EMF stage since her last performance in 2013.

Also confirmed to perform at the 2017 ESSENCE Festival nighttime concerts at the Superdome include Jazmine Sullivan, Ro James, Junes Diary, Chaka Khan, Shaggy, India.Arie, John Legend, Yuna, Tweet, Lalah Hathaway, Lizzo, and more.

Weekend ticket packages for the 2017 Essence Festival go on sale on Dec. 16. For more information, visit essence.com.

Teyana Taylor Presents The Unplugged Tour 2016

It’s good to see that women these days don’t let childbirth hold them down for too long. Case in point, many of the ladies who live the star studded life don’t tend to take too much maternity leave, and get right back to business. Teyana Taylor is one of those ladies.

After snapping back to her pre-baby bod, the G.O.O.D Music r&b belle is about to hit the stage for a 10 date Spring tour. This tour will be a bit different than her past tours, as this will be totally an unplugged show. Performing an unplugged show would be something that people may not see for Teyana, as she’s usually an artist who brings the performance aspect of things. Her string of shows start at the end of April in Silver Spring, MD and finish up in Los Angeles.

Tickets for the shows are now on sale via Ticketmaster, so check the full tour date list below.

We won’t call her a “struggling artist”, since she HATES that reference, but she is a is a rising artist who has been actively involved in music since the age of five.  As a brand, PatriceLIVE encompasses the strong stage presence and captivating performances that Patrice is known for as an artist. She is a singer, songwriter and vocal coach who is trained in classical, gospel and jazz music.

Teyanaflier

After having a whirl wind year last year with her R&B breakout hit “Maybe”, releasing her debut studio album “VII” and a year full of touring and other promotional runs, Teyana Taylor is finally making a stop through to the DMV for her first headlining concert in the area.

Announced just last week, she will be bringing her brand of sensual R&B/hip-hop fused music to the Fillmore Silver Spring for a live concert on Thursday, July 9th starting at 7:45 pm. Supporting her on this show are two of the DMV’s finest upcoming artist, MainGirl and PatriceLive.

Tickets for this event are $43 and recently went on sale via Live Nation, so cop them while you can because her shows in other cities have certainly sold out. If you’re uncertain of what to expect from the Good Music star, then watch below as we caught up with her at last year’s MeccaFest.

Review: 1st Annual MeccaFest

In the midst of the chaos that is Howard Homecoming Weekend, was a new event by the name of MeccaFest. This is one of a few new festivals to debut this year and it is always nice to see something new emerge in the chocolate city. It allows to you to see the many different approaches used to try to bring the public the best experience possible. In this case, the Howard University alumni’s that produced the event were trying to recreate Howard’s Yardfest; which no longer host live performances.

The line up for the event included rapper Future, Elle Varner, Rae Sremmurd, Teyana Taylor, Jeremih and more. The event was scheduled to start at noon on this beautiful Friday in the nation’s capitol, however, the performances did not make way until around 4 p.m. Among the many opening acts was a girl group by the name of ‘Good Girl’, I was impressed. They have a little ways to go but the potential is definitely there. They are engaging, have a well-balanced show and good look to them. I would say that they were obviously a little uncomfortable in the tight space on the stage with band equipment and more than a handful of dancers but that can be worked on. Teyana Taylor put on a SHOW, best part of the entire show in my opinion. Of course, some wished that she was singing during the performance of her single ‘Maybe’ but the focus seemed to be the dance. However, she did have surprise appearances by Yo Gotti and label mate Pusha T that sent the crowd into an uproar. Another surprise during the festival included DC’s own, Wale and Memphis bred, Snootie Wild. Wale performed a few of his hits and they both joined Jeremih on stage for a little while as well.

Overall, I would like to say that I had a wonderful time covering this event but in this particular instance, that was not the case. You had artist that did not show or just plain refused to perform because people who had no purpose of being on the stage did not want to get off. There were security teams that did nothing about the crowd that took over restricted areas so that they could get near the acts on stage. Also, not informing the crowd that an artist that they came to see was not performing. Instead, you had the DJ continue to spin records while hosts jumped around the stage keeping the crowd preoccupied and when the audience finally realized that things were being packed up on the stage; you cut the lights off.

I could go on and on but hopefully next year they learn from the mistakes and build from there. Check out a few performances below.
